Our Approach

Design-Based Research, real workshops, and the Irish Primary Curriculum — three pillars that shape everything we make.

Design-Based Research in Action

The DAL is built using Design-Based Research (DBR) — a methodology that develops practical solutions and theoretical understanding simultaneously. Rather than testing a finished product, DBR shapes the intervention through real cycles of design, implementation, reflection, and refinement.

This means every resource on this platform has been through the fire of a real workshop — tested with real teachers, refined based on their honest feedback, and improved iteratively. The research doesn't sit apart from the practice; it is the practice.

Our Beliefs

Experimentation Over Perfection

The best learning happens when teachers feel free to try things without fear of failure. The process of experimenting is itself the point.

Teacher Empowerment

Digital empowerment isn't just knowing how to use a tool. It's having the confidence, curiosity, and creative purpose to make your own decisions.

Grounded in the Curriculum

Everything connects to the Irish Primary Curriculum — creativity, agency, inclusion, and contemporary competencies in Visual Arts education.

The DBR Cycle

The DAL is developed through iterative cycles. Each cycle produces better resources AND deeper understanding of what helps teachers integrate digital art confidently.

01

Design

Plan resources, activities, and platform features based on curriculum needs and teacher feedback from previous cycles.

02

Implement

Run real workshops with trainee and qualified teachers. Try things out. Document everything — the successes and the stumbles.

03

Reflect

Analyse what happened. Teacher interviews, observations, questionnaires. What worked? What didn't? What surprised us?

04

Refine

Redesign based on findings. Update the platform, improve resources, and prepare for the next cycle. Repeat.

From Workshop to Your Classroom

Everything on this platform starts in a real workshop and ends in your hands.

🎨 Hands-On WorkshopsTeachers experiment with art materials and digital tools in a real creative studio — not a lecture hall. Making, playing, failing, and discovering.
📸 Document EverythingPhotos, videos, teacher reflections, process logs — every step is captured to inform the resources and the research.
📦 Shape Into ResourcesWorkshop experiments are turned into classroom-ready materials — practical, adaptable, and freely available on the DAL.
🚀 You Take It FurtherYou bring it into your classroom, adapt it, and share what you discover. Your feedback shapes what comes next.

Aligned with the Irish Primary Curriculum

The DAL is designed around the principles of the new Irish Primary Curriculum Framework, with particular attention to Visual Arts and the development of key competencies.

Being Creative

Encouraging imaginative thinking, exploration of materials and media, and creative risk-taking in visual arts.

Being a Digital Learner

Building confidence and capability with digital tools as creative instruments — not just productivity software.

Being a Communicator

Using art and digital media to express ideas, share stories, and engage in meaningful peer dialogue.
